Post subject: | Help with humbucker mounting rings |
Hey guys. I'm in the process of finishing a build. It's a 2 humbucker build, and I'm on a tight budget. I have two humbuckers here that I could use, but there's a problem. They are different than most. Most h/buckers have a single ear on each end that the mounting screws and springs screw in, and the pup rings have one hole each side. The ones I've got have one ear on one side and two on the other. They're designed to prevent the pup from tilting in the mounting ring. I need h/bucker pickup rings to match, specificly one pup mounting hole on one side and two on the other, both tapered with flat bottoms, one tall and one short. If anyone knows where I can find these pup rings, I'd appreciate a heads up. My other alternative is to modify the pups, which I may do, but I'd rather just find the right rings. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. |

never seen one like that....... you MIGHT have to do a mod on an existing 2 hole ring. drill the extra holes and then either leave the other hole empty or fill it with a dummy screw CAed in place..... |

Do you know what kind of pickups they are? Ibanez pickups from the seventies and early eighties had that arrangement and are quite sought after. They're not always marked but usually at least have an ink stamped number on the base. If they're marked super58 or super70, let me know- I've got the perfect home for them.. The double hole mounting rings are hard to find. It's possible to modify a standard pickup mounting ring to take them by filling the centre hole with a piece of scratchplate plastic and drilling for the double mounting screws. It's a technique I've seen demonstrated on the Ibanez Collector's forum, but I've never tried it myself. Acetone was used to melt the plastic plug into place and it needed levelling and polishing, but the results were almost invisible. Cheers, Bri |

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll mod one or the other. No biggie. MacD, the pickups are from a Washburn M70 and a BC Rich platinum series Warlock I used to own.I don't know anyone who would rave about them, but they served me well for a long time on many a stage, and hopefully they'll serve me awhile longer. Thanks again, guys. |

Mike, Try Carvin guitars website. They have pickup rings with 2 mouning holes on one side. Terry |

Thanks. Unfortunately, the Carvins won't work. The holes are not the same distance apart. On the Carvin(unless they have changed the design) the pickup has one ear with three holes fairly close together, so that if one is using them with Carvin rings they'll work, or if one is using them with standard rings they'll work as well. The pickups I have have two seperate tabs that are spaced farther apart than the Carvin's. By the way, I own the Carvin C22B humbucker, and it's IMHO one of the best bridge pickups I've ever used. Love it! |

Mike what are your original rings made of? Metal, plastic wood? The reason I ask, is if you use wood, I can machine you a couple and place the holes where ever you need them. If they are metal or plastic, I can't help. Mike |

Thanks, Mike. I may take you up on that when the time comes. I won't be needing them until the weather warms up enough to start finish work. I am leaning towards wood. The tuners have ebony buttons, and I plan to use ebony control knobs, so they would fit right in. If I change my mind and go with the standard plastic I'll mod the pickups to fit. |

kent armstrong have the 2/1 screw holes. but as someone here suggested, make your own wooden rings. much cooler if the guitar has a natural finish. quick and easy with a router and belt sander. |
