I orderred a fender strat neck off the internet and compared it to the original and the heel of the neck is a good 2mm too thick.

What would be the best tool to use?

I thought of going slow with a block sander but that would take a long time to shave off 2mm, and I'm apprehensive about the sanding getting crooked.
So I'm wondering what would be the ideal tool to buy?

Hand plane. Clamp the neck to a bench and plane away. A block plane would work ok. Finish up with a sanding block. Take a few swipes and measure. You be suprised how fast 2mm can disapear.

I would be inclined to consider taking material from the body pocket with a router where you have a flat top and back to index for an accurate level cut ... if that makes sense for your project?

I could try taking from the pocket, never thought of that.

+1. I've done it both ways, and I'd much prefer to take material from the neck pocket. With a good template and/or the proper bits, it's much easier to keep the bottom of the neck pocket level than the heel itself, but both can work just fine if you're careful.
