Post subject:  Question about when to install the nut

I was planning on putting the finish on electric guitars and then installing the nut, but this would mean being very careful not to get any grain filler or clear coat in the nut slot. So now I’m thinking of installing the nut first, and then putting the finish on the instrument. I would leave the nut bigger and then file it down when I cut the string slots. This way the grain filler and clear coat would flow right up and around the nut sealing it in very nicely.

What do you think?

Masking tape covering the nut slot will keep it clean, and you will have an easier job removing the nut at a later date without finish on it.

I agree with Fred. I would just tape off the nut slot and install it after the finish has been applied....But you can obviously save yourself some heartache if you fit the nut first, leaving it a couple thou' wide to account for the finish thickness.

You can just make the nut so it plays correctly, remove it and install a dummy nut (Hmmm sounds like someone I know). Then complete the finish, score accurately against the dummy with a sharp razor to remove it and then fit the nice clean nut already to go.

Hey look at that! I just made my 2000th post here talking about a dummy nut, bet no one has done that before :D

Cheers
