Hi all,
Garry here..... been playing guitar for 30 something years.... would have thought I'd have improved by now lol idunno
Anyway... bought myself a kit to have a go at building myself one...
I am a complete newbie in woodworking...staining and all types of luthier-ism

Really enjoying learning how to do this... The staining
Tung oil, soooooo many coats, I am finally learning a bit of patience

The question I have is, I was a bit over-exuberant with one stage of the sanding back and bared a bit of the wood...

Is there a way of patch repairing or would I need to strip it all back?

I think it looks pretty darn good and from experience, only you will notice it. Also, from experience, trying to fix something like that only makes it worse.

Good job, lets see some pictures when its all together.

Really enjoyed learning how to do this.... sad that it's over lol....I need a new project. ... how to sneak another guitar into the house wow7-eyes

May I ask what kit that is? I have a young friend who wants to build a LP style guitar but I've tried to talk him out of it because carving both the top and necks are such a hassle. However I think he could handle setting the neck, doing the finish and wiring. Yours looks really great.

Next you build a Fender style, do a little more of the work yourself. You'll need to buy a few more tools and dedicate a little more space in the workshop. Let me warn you, you're doomed like the rest of us...

Thank you for the encouraging comments people.... feeling genuinely chuffed (pleased in case chuffed means anything else across the waters)

I used Liberon water based wood stains and tung oil ....After about 10 or 12 coats of oil and lots of 0000 steel wool, I used 5 coats of Liberon finishing oil on the front to gloss it up.
I will be looking at a fender telecaster style next freeman.... will definitely be here asking advice as I get more adventurous

Gary, thanks for the link, my young friend might be interested in pursuing this. I recently built a kit amp from the UK and having it shipped here was very simple.

Something else for you to consider is a kit acoustic. It will ratchet the build up a notch or two but still makes it reasonable for the beginning home builder since the operations that require special tools are done for you. Lots of options in the US that probably can ship to you but I'm sure you have some there too.

Looks great. As for the over sanding I would have just wiped on some more tung oil. These finishes repair easily compared to some others.

Still loving the guitar but the bridge was just a bit too far back so managed to find this one which gives a bit more movement bringing the saddles closer to where they should be

Also, for the final thing, lowered the knobs closer to the body. ... not necessary, but I built this and it would have bugged me with the pot nuts on show below the knobs...
