I just wanted to let everyone know, if you weren't already aware, that I offer a set of videos that cover most topics on building acoustic guitars. It's not technically a start to finish course, but more a collection of topics, but it covers about 85% of building a acoustic. Not everything applies to a Kit, but it should cover most things in a Kit guitar and then if you desire to go at one from scratch you've got it too. I've got a sale running right now where my DVD set (14 dvd's in the set) is only $140. They have TONS of info in them and I think it could help in you lutherie journey.

Thing with John's vide's all kits are not the same and some you can have just all the parts and some with varied parts made or joined. They may come with some written instruction or a video, but John's are pretty in depth and a good resourse if stuck on something. Not confusing. Good stuff on the forum, but I know sometime seeing it done or following along with a video can be better than text for understanding. If investing the bucks in a kit or putting all the stuff together and then building the whole kit, can't go wrong here. With the video's and the text here and books, should go pretty smooth.

I learn more from my mistakes than my successes

I just started building a little over a year ago, and wished I had discovered John Mayes' videos before I attempted my first build. I found them before I did my 2nd build, and they made a huge difference. His DVDs are very well done and presented in an easy to understand way, and in addition to being an excellent builder John is pretty good in front of a camera too!

I ordered the advanced voicing video and received it in a mere two days. I like the video a lot and feel it is very helpful in understanding and controlling this process.

Well I will certain pitch for John's video's, they are worth every penny especially for
beginners like myself. I go back to the video's time after time when I get stuck.
For me the tip and techniques for using the various jigs and tools was worth the money alone.

I really enjoy watching Mayes DVD too. It's actually funny at times especially when he runs out of material. hehehe
I too go back and forth for jigs and other parts of building that I might want to see again. Definetly worth the money in my opinion.

Two jigs I'm thinking of building after watching his DVD are mortise/tenon and truss rod channel jig.

Dudes, I bought the video

I got a set a couple years ago and have enjoyed the viewing as well as the info, John's corny narrative is great and his info is very useful, I found both voicing videos excellent, as I had no bench mark as to what tap sound is needed.
I only have one complaint, the labels on my DVD's would rub in the laptop drive after the DVD heated up and the video would quit, being in Canada return would be a problem so I copied them to the hard drive and view them that way. By the way I have watched them several times and always seem to get something from each viewing.

Johns DVDS are great!
They are done in such a way that you feel like you are standing right there next to John watching him build a guitar.
I highly recommend them!

I'll throw my endorsement in here as well. I've watched the entire set, and several of the more than once. They have been immensely helpful getting through my first build.

And yes, they can be quite funny, and after watching so many hours of Mr. Mayes smiling at me from the other side of my monitor, I almost feel like I know him. I'm afraid if I saw him walking down the street I'd walk up and start talking to him like we were old friends. :p

I own johns videos too. They are quite good and he has a good way of teaching. He's not boring and stiff like some other teachers i have seen in training videos.

Once I started to watch the John's videos I all but threw my books away. The ahaa's just kept coming. They're priceless, really. They saved me a serious amount of time hacking my way through on my own. If I had to do it all over again, I'd get them earlier than I did. They're worth every penny!! I didn't start with a kit so I'm sure the instruction is good there, but there's no replacing the visual of seeing somebody do it. He does a great job.
