I'm at the final tweaking and setup stage of my first (classical) guitar. For truing frets, Cumpiano & Natelson say something along the lines of "we have a dead flat file dedicated to this task." Hardware store files all seem to be blister packed, so checking with a straightedge is impossible.

I guess I have two related questions:
1. Can anyone point to a source for a truly flat file?
2. Is it really necessary to have a super-flat file?

Thanks

Try this if you are excessively rich:

I am satisfied with the results of water stones, 1000 and 8000 grit, trued with sandpaper on a granite plate. If you do a search you should find a recent thread about this, there are several other methods around.

Ted, builders use a variety of things (plate glass, an old level etc) to address the dead flat thing.
Check out this recent thread

Alexandru -

I see what you mean! I won't be buying one of them any time soon.

Dave -

Thanks much for the link to the fret truing thread. Lots of good ideas there. I think I can call my problem solved.

Ted
