Hi All

A thickness caliper such as the one below has been on my list
for quite a while, but there just never seems to be enough "budget"
for it.

I do have one of these though.

and one of these as well

I removed the threaded part of the clamp (the plastic tip pops on & off)
I took a drill bit the diameter of inside the threads on the clamp, chucked it
in my drill press and drilled through the opposing end of the clamp,
I then opened this hole to the od of the dial indicator. I flattened the end of a wood screw,
drilled an appropriate size hole and let it cut it's own thread. Put a doubIe nut on the threaded
rod to lock it in position & smooth the ball end if necessary. I had to do a little fiddling to get
the alignment right on, but it works well & I can take it apart when I want to use it as a clamp.

Hope this is of use to someone!

Use what you have, right?

You can also make a frame out of plywood that works well.

This is the stuff I had around, the magnetic arm on the drill press trick. In the center of the drillpress table is a 3"x3" hole for inserts, I use an insert with a pin with the dial indicator.

A bit of plywood and a cheap dial gauge.
