the book "Wood as an Engineering Material" contains a wealth of information about a wide variety of species.

That chart does not correspond with my experience at all. Chestnut, softer than Lacewood, Douglas Fir and Teak? Cocobolo softer than Zebra?

What am I missing here?

The PDF file seems more accurate, to me.
