This was built to be used as a welding table, but it could be adapted for luthiery quite easily.
It calls to mind the old pattern makers vises.
StewMac offers something similar, but smaller.

a welder/gearhead buddy of mine posted this last week on FB...pretty cool. i just wonder how long the ball would last under a shower of molten beads
