For those that use Rhino..... Autodesk has recently bought out VSR . They are offering a fantastic deal on an incredible piece of shape modeling software...... ( This had been at $1325 before ) There is also a render for this program that works inside Rhino that is on sale as well. http://www.autodesk.com/store/shape-mod ... -for-rhino We have both T-Splines and VSR and we personally prefer VSR although both are now Autodesk products. This software makes curve shaping/smoothing and designing fairly easy with-in Rhino. Thought I'd share. Blessings, Kevin |

Thanks very much for posting this Kevin! I tried purchasing the VSR Rhino Plugin but the download link is broken on the Autodesk site. Looks like a perfect tool for tricky heal transitions and the like. Edit: update - I had to do an online chat with two Autodesk customer service people but they were able to get me a direct download link within about 20 minutes. It's working perfectly now. What a great plugin! |

Yes, thanks for posting this! I've downloaded VSR and have been trying it out and like it so far. I'll be buying a license while they're on sale for sure. Dave |

So did anyone pick up either of these tools? I downloaded the shape modeling tool and have played with it a bit. I guess I haven't seen the value added for my basic guitar related stuff. The discount is significant, but I don't want to buy something that I won't use. |

Have you tried using it for blending surfaces such as neck to body and neck to headstock transitions? I really like it for those. The analysis tools are extremely helpful too. |

I got both plugins, and I find both to be very useful. The multiblend tool in particular does a nice job with a lot of tricky little surfaces that drove me crazy with the regular Rhino commands. Adjusting the handles on surfaces as you build them in order to get what you're looking for is is easier for me than it is with standard Rhino. The analysis tools are a great help too. Transitions at the heel and headstock (and 5th peg region on banjo necks) are much nicer surfaces with much less effort. The real time renderer is nice too--just a little easier to really scope out quality of surface than the stock Rhino renderer. I wouldn't have paid full price for either product, since neither is absolutely critical for me. But, especially for the price, they're both great tools that I've been using frequently. Dave |

I intend to pick up VSR. I tried a demo last year and was impressed, but it was too expensive for what it did, though I hear it's brilliant for fitting a surface to point clouds, such as you'd get when digitizing. I also tried T Splines last year. It's ridiculously powerful software, and a lot of fun if you're designing, I don't know....a bicycle....maybe a mold for a cell phone case. Stuff with organic geometry that kind of flows this way and that way. In the end, I found that laying out precise contours by making a skeleton, and then fitting a surface, maybe didn't always give the best quality surface and maybe it left more hand finish work, but the parts that needed to be precise were easy to make precise and accurate. I didn't find that was the case with T-Splines, but if it was just $300 I'd buy it too. |

Looks like the sale is over and it's back up to $1325. It was about $370 while the sale was on. |
