Maple and sycamore are broad categories of species. There are several species of each with very different wood qualities. That having been said, I have used platanus racemosa because it is an urban wood in California, and I like the idea of using reclaimed/urban woods. I can say that it is BEAUTIFUL. Flat sawn it has a figure like lacewood, and darkens with age to a medium-dark brown. I have used it for backs, sides, and even necks. It carves and bends easily. It is definitely softer than any maple I have used, but I don't know that to be a bad thing. To be fair, I reinforced the neck with two small CF rods. Not sure I would trust it for necks otherwise, but that is just seat of the pants figuring. It might just be fine. Because sycamore is local to me, and maple is not, I would choose the sycamore over the maple unless maple is specifically called for. YMMV. PS. I think this post got posted in the wrong sub-forum. Not sure it has anything to do with CNC. |
