I have a 75 watt Epilog. It's very good for pearl veneers and abalam up to .030. I use slow speed & low power. myspace.com/mikebrittain |

That's interesting, Mike. What kind of cut surface does it leave? Nelson |

The edges are very clean & sharp. Any burning will clean right off. I will say that the learning curve is tough, similar to cnc routers etc. Mike |

Is that laser a CO2, YAG or FIBER? |

This may be true with a laminate like ablam as the laminating media may keep the shell veneers from disintegrating, but laser will not work with natural shell as the heat powers the shell near a 64th of an inch either side of the beam and makes for very raged edge. I have been through the testing of natural shell being laser cut several times at several differnt settings and speeds. water Jet works great. I am supprised that it work on ablam. would love to see close-up photos. |

You may want to call Bob Rigaud at http://www.rgmusic.com/ To find out about the details of using a laser on Pearl and abalone. He has been using it for quite some time and his inlay work is really good. Hes a super nice guy too and loves to talk to other luthiers. |
