I am building my first guitar. When I started, I figured, "Use scrap because it's your first". It's turned out nicer than I thought. The mahogany back has several worm or termite holes in it. I tried filling with CA and Dust. The problem is that the CA turned the dust a dark brown. Now they really stick out. How do I fill these so you can't see the holes? Thanks, Doug Ubele |

Doug, Id try shaving a sliver out of the wood in an area outside your pattern, then using an exact knife, cut a slice out over the top of the worm hole and glue in that sliver, Ive done this to spruce and redwood tops with great success. Make sure your sliver is deep enough to still be there after finish sanding. |

I am not understanding what you are explaning. Could you try again? I don't see what you mean when you say, "Id try shaving a sliver out of the wood in an area outside your pattern". Outside what pattern. Or "cut over the hole" Thanks, Doug |

Doug, I "think" what Lance is saying, is to remove the worm hole area by cutting it out, removing the smallest piece possible. Then, from the area that was outside the pattern of the back, or the scrap wood that you have left over after cutting the back out, cut a sliver to match the one that you took out of the back when you removed the worm hole. Fit it in, working with the grain and pattern to make it as seamless as possible, and glue it in. Basically, cut the worm hole out, and replace it with another piece of the same wood. Does that make any sense? I hope so! Lance correct me if I am wrong. Jeff |

I dont think Lance meant to cut out the hole but rather a patch for the surface. If you look at the Sloan patching tool for cracks on StewMac's site http://www.stewmac.com the idea is to cut an angled boat shaped wedge that would fit into the area that the hole is in. The section around the hole doesnt have to be very big at all or all the way through. an angled cut from each side of the hole with a patch that is similarly shaped and grained aligned can be so inobtrusive that once finished it will hardly show (unless pointed out). |
