When doing a back strip of shell thats .050 thick - do you first.

join the plate
then sand to get a smooth surface -
then route a channel for the inlay .050 deep or so - then sand the inlay smooth?

Is this the standard procedure?

That's pretty much my standard procedure. I like to get the back sanded as smooth as possible so I don't have to remove much shell and I try to get the channel as close to the thickness of the shell as posible also for the same reason.

Lance I inlay about .01 shallow and sand back to level. shell may varry in thichness from on piece to the next by as much as .005. This means that my finish thickness of shell will be .040
