hi all, i am new to the board and have been a amature luthier for about 1 year. i have just come accross my first real problem. 1980 aria pro2 les paul standard, 3 piece mahagony medium set neck with rosewood board. i need to dress the frets but i have to straighten the neck first, i have found the brass adjusting nut to be somewhat frozen, not over tightened, but like it had not been turned in many years. anyway, it did loosen with a light pop, i backed it off 1/2 turn, but did not give any visable relief to the neck even after several hours. so then i tried to tighten it and when it reached it's original spot it became VERY hard to turn (1/2 turn over a 2 day period) and again, no visable change in the neck. from what i can see, the rod does appear to have some light rust under the board. do you think the rod has rusted to the wood? if so is there a cure? any help would be great!! tom

Welcome to OLF, Tom. Someone will chime in with an answer for you before long. This is not an area I know anything about. |

When you've relieved the nut and there is no movement. Chock both ends up a bit and clamp the neck in the center to your workbench. Leave it overnight check it later. Lube the thread with a little, and I mean a little grease. Like stuff you use greasing a car. Not much, just enough. |

Nah, flip it over, then clamp. First grease the thread minimally. Clamp protecting the back of the neck. Then try adjusting your nut or leave it overnight and try it the next day. IF the glue joint allowed the fretboard to slip on the neck, it may not work. There is a technique for heating the fretboard and tensioning the neck, allowing the join to slip, but it would be best in the hands of a guitar tech. Someone had to try it first without experience, so if you are bold, you might try that if the clamping doesn't do it. And another thing. Try PM or private message. I visited may times yesterday without seeing this thread again. If no one jumps on your thread, it goes to the bottom. Just another idea to keep the thread alive. |
