I have a classical guitar that needs the tuning machines replaced. The hole spacing on these is 40 mm (1-9/16"). Since the only thing I can find anywhere has a 35 mm (1-3/8") spacing, I was wondering if anyone out there has run across tuners with the 40 mm spacing? These need to be reasonably priced. I don't want to get into plugging and redrilling the holes, if I can help it. Craig S. |

I just went through this for 39mm. Maybe if you check closely, you will see that yours are really 39mm. If so, do an archive search for "classic tune" and look for the topic started by Bill Bergman. There will be two USA links for about $80. |

You could get kind of tuner that doesn't have the Lyre on one end and then just cut them into separate tuners. Looking at the pictures in the Stew-Mac catalog, it looks like you could cut them at the screw hole and have enough room to drill a new screw hole on either side. Their 5835 tuners might work for this. If the picture is accurate, you might be able to make this look like they were originally separate tuners except for the filigree won't frame the new screw holes. |

Fustero makes single tuning machines that people use for 7 and 8 string guitars. They are expensive, however. Fustero dealer |

Gilbert tuners are available off plate as individual tuners, you can set your own spacing. Good luck. |

If, as Bill suggested, the spacing is really 39mm. Try this: wdmusic |

There is also an ebay seller (Ron Fernandez?) who regularly has singles sets for sale (they look like tuners by Van Ghent). About $40. |

Thanks for the input everyone. I'll check tonight, but the spacing is very likely 39 mm and not 40 mm. It looks like the tuners WD Music offers will do the trick. Craig S. |
