Here's my latest with some macassar zoot from the Zootman. Don't be painting that new zoot building for too long, Bob. The fumes could get to you and we need our zoot.

Macassar ebony back, sides, head sandwich
Italian spruce top
Ziricote, maple, mahogany rosette
Ebony binding
Peruvian walnut neck

Beautiful geetar Ken. I really like the unique cut-away and of course the zoot too.

I wondered what new members who have not been properly indoctrinated to the meaning of the term "zoot" might think from your thread's title.......

Ken,

what did you think of the walnut for the neck? That dark wood looks great with the ebony. Did you stack the heel or did you find a thick piece?

Burton, the Peruvian walnut was softer and lighter than the black walnut I'm used to. It was a little fibrous too and I thought it might be hard to final sand before finishing but it wasn't and it took the finish well, It was quite stiff so I wasn't too concerned with the lighter weight. It's a laminated neck without any stripes. I couldn't find any thick stock, but I'll be looking for it now.

Really nice Ken. CLASS,@ fine rosette. I have built sevral with the peruvian walnut and will probably make love the stuff, if used as the main neck wood or as laminate.

Mattia, here's a photo of part of the process. I first make a log of edge grained veneers and back cutoff pieces. It's a little flimsy, but the tiles I slice off of it are sturdy. I build the rosette in the channel I cut with my fly cutter. I even use the drill press for temporary clamping. That's a picture of another rosette I did using the drill press to clamp. After it's made I use the fly cutter to install the purfling lines.

Arnt, I stagger the bridge pins as insurance against future cracking, but I like the look too.
