liquid hide glue

I was up at rockler this weekend to pick some regular hide glue.


I got the stuff i usually use, that most people talk of here (flakes to mix with hot water)
but i also bought a bottle of the 'tite bond liquid hide glue'


I was wonderin what ya'll thought of it. I used it to put together a set of zebrawood ribs with the neck and butt block and the linings. I was kinda surprised, it dries glassey and herd like regular hide glue but you do not have to use it hot. It took a few minutes to dry, but I did not see any other drawbacks. Just wondering if ya'll ever used it.

John, I've never used it because of all the bad press. I'm sure there are some good uses for it. I doubt Franklin would make a glue that was worthless for all applications.

For guitars I'd say around fifty percent use Titebond, the other fifty percent use Hot Hide Glue, which leaves little percents for other glues.

Why don't you do some destructive testing on scrap and tell us what you found?   

I know, the label made it hard to resist. Go for the real stuff, and rest easy.... It takes some getting used to using hot hide glue, but worth it.

I have heard negatives about the Tite Bond Hide Glue too.  I do know that in the tests that Fine Woodworking ran, the Old Brown Glue, another brand of liquid hide glue, did pretty well comparatively.  Don't know if I would use it on a guitar though.  People use fish glue though, and it seems to work well.  I think the difference is that Fish Glue does not require the chemicals to keep it liquid, that hide glue does.

I tried this years ago and i felt it created very brittle joints. And the bottle dried rock hard after about a couple of months from opening it. Yes I had the cap on it and stored it in a dry cool place. i'll stick with the yellow stuff for now.

    If you are going to use hide blue on instruments ,you have to use HHG for best results. I think many of us tried the Franklin bottled . If my name is going into the guitar I won't waste my time. This is not dependable in the luthierie trade.
