Is there as issue re: strength of sap-woods? Rosewoods? lighter density Rosewood v heavier? Otherwoods? Are sap-woods inherently weaker? Thanks, |

Bob, I have some wood at home that I'm probably going to use bookmatched for a fretboard. I can't think of any reason not to, except that removing the fretboard in the future would no doubt ruin it. I can't speak out of any certain knowledge about sapwood being weaker, but my experience with it says no. Don't quote me though, cuz once you do, someone will come along with data to prove me wrong. That's the way of things for me.

Timely question Bob! I was just looking at some of my coco fret board blanks the other day and whishing I had enough thickness to make them book matched. I suppose you could slice them with a thin kerf blade, join, and laminate them with some other rosewood to get the thickness back? I can’t imagine there being any more issues with book matched fret boards then there are with binding them. Do some of our fine wood dealers have thick blanks available for such a fret board? Wade |
