Hey computer/website gurus out there...I was editing my site late last nite and I think I did away with a file I need...was using Fire FTP and so the file is gone forever if I did delete it, but my question is: How do I direct the link to a new file? I had a dude doing my site maintainence for me, but he had to give up his side business and I was part of it ...also, the only thing I have on my laptop to edit with is MSWord...I have FrontPage on my desktop but I'm away from it for 2 1/2 more weeks...I really need to get this link fixed because it's to a guitar I have for sale at a reduced price and it needs to find a home! Thanks in advance for any wisdom....

Larry,

I'm no guru, but I've built a few web sites.

You don't need a web editor to make changes in your page code. Any simple text editor will do, such as Notepad. I believe Word might even work if you save the document as raw text.

To be on the safe side, use a copy of the web page file. If you know the name and location of the original file on the web server, you could just make the name of the replacement file the same and put it in the same directory as the original, and you wouldn't need to change anything on the web page.

Keep us posted.

In looking at your site, and the directory, it looks like all the images are there, as are the pages associated with the different views of the guitar. Looks like you're only missing the guitar9gallery.html file, so you're not too bad off.

You could probably take one of the other guitarXgallery.html files, such as the one for guitar6, and turn it into the missing one. Copy one of those say, from guitar 6 to the guitar 9 directory. Change its name to guitar9gallery.html.   Change the statements for the thumbnails to the equivalent for guitar9 and also the the links on the thumbnails to the guitar9 equivalents larger images. That is, wherever you see guitar6, for example, change the 6 to 9. Do that for all statements that contain the name guitar6.

That's what I'd do.

Hi Pat,

Well, I've just been looking at all the files thru Fire FTP...I think I've really jumbled some stuff up and I'm getting a headache trying to figure out what all I've got on there...right now, the main botheration is the broken link from the "Herringbone OM for sale" on the home page...no matter what I do, I get a "404 page not found" msg. when I click on it...even though all the files are on my hard drive...I can't seem to get the file on the hard drive to go where the link can find it!!! Am I just missing something here that's simple for a guy who knows?

Thanks,
Larry

Larry,

Lucky for you, the directories on your site aren't locked down real tight, so I can have a look later tonight when the after-dinner hubbub around here dies down.

What? Not locked down tight? THAT'S where my billion dollars hidden in a double-secret cyber compartment of my http thingie went! Seriously tho, thanks for taking the time to poke around there for me...I'm stuck in an airplane ground school here in Montreal for 2 1/2 more weeks and this particular link is the one I can least afford to have busted right now! I'm hoping to move the guitar before I get back to Memphis. I'll be thinking of a way to repay your kindness Pat!
