I played High school football with a quarterback that was by all high school sports writer's account the best in the country. He went on to the NFL and was drafted and played 5 years for an expansion team and had 5 horrible seasons there throwing tons of interception. Then was traded to an established power house where he was the back-up for two years. Every one had wrote him off as a could have been.

Then during the play offs the starting QB for his team goes out with a catastrophic injury. My team mate comes in and leads the team from to win the Super Bowl. well the sports writers gave him no acclaim saying something about a "monkey" could have done the job with the team he had and that he never could have gotten them through a whole season and to a Super Bowl.

The very next year the high school team mate of mine leads his team a winning full season as well as another Super Bowl Championship. Not once did this player ever make mention of the sarcastic press he received during any point in his career. To me that is the essence of a sportsman.

Now for the trivia question. Name my high school team mate

Here is a clue. Our senior class put 4 players into the NFL Carlos Pennywell, Rodrick Foppie, Bo Harris and The unnamed quarterback.

Of the mentioned Rodrik and Bo both had one season carriers due to neck and knee injuries but all four started their first season in the NFL. Carlos washed out due to drug issues after 3 seasons (did not surprise me)
Doug Williams ?
Here is your tub of lard. I knew you would get there if you kept trying.

in your PM you had the right expansion team. but to tell you would give it away.

As a freshman in high school Doug once sat on his knees at the goal line and through the ball to the 40 yard line on the opposite side of the 50 that is 70 yards. In my opinion if a quality team had drafted him in stead of the brand new Tampa Bay Buccaneers he would have been in the Hall of fame much sooner.

But that is just one of those things, a new expansion team always gets the #1 of the draft the year before they start playing. It has been the down fall of may great QBs.

All Right ! I finally won one of these wonderful buckets of lard.    That must have been something Michael playing football with Doug. I remember when he came here(Bucs) ,he did have an amazing arm and accurate on the deep ball. But like you said he didn't have much help. Then they let him go after a contract dispute and on to fame! Is he coaching at Grambling now ? Btw.. What position did you play in high school with Doug?

Yep He is coaching Grambling. Has been for I think 8 years.

I played defensive free safety and punter and on rare occasions half back. This was at Captain Shreve High, Shreveport La. 1971 through 1974. We won 4 consecutive State 5A Championships, also 71-74. 3 of them with Doug as our quarterback. My family unfortunately had to move away from Shreveport in early October 74, my senior year so I did not get to share that last championship with him.

These were hard time for racial relation in Shreveport's high schools. Black panthers and all that mess. I once saw Doug personally escort a black panther off the campus of our high school on his head(the black panthers that is) Doug was and is one of the most upstanding men I have ever known. you would have to know just how distillate his you childhood was coming from a very small back woods town in the woods of North Louisiana. He was brought to Shreveport by our coach who had seen him play on a 6 man team his last year of Jr. high. he also played basket ball and won 3 state titles there. When he started high school he was 6' 10 1/2" tall. if I remember right he was right at 7' when he entered the NFL

Now days you could not get away with that. Though it was in part to help improve our football team, it also save Doug from a life of squalor

I lived in Tulsa when Williams was the QB for the short lived (don't even remember the name of the...) league.  He made a wonderful impression on T-Town.  Outstanding man.

Thanks for the story Michael-very interesting.   I didn't know he was at Grambling that long. A great guy for sure!

Steve, I think you mean the USFL. Oklahoma Outlaws ,right?
We had the Tampa Bay Bandits who were very popular here.

I belive williams only won one super bowl. You state "The very next year the high school team mate of mine leads his team a winning full season as well as another Super Bowl Championship. Not once did this player ever make mention of the sarcastic press he received during any point in his career. To me that is the essence of a sportsman" He never led his team to a full wining season as well as another superbowl. The 49er's won super bowl 23 over the bengals the folloing year.
