I have been using the truss rods that are accessable through the sound hole in the body, but I would like to try my luck at the ones that are adjustable through the headplate.


Are there any differences in the rods?


Some pictures on how to prepare the neck for these type of rods would be nice to see !!


Also, I am particularly interested in truss rods that dont weigh as much. The ones I have been using weigh a ton and I would like to lighten the neck if possible. Any suggestions?

Ken, two way rods can do either.

I use LMI's compression rod which is lighter in weight. It is accessible from the headstock.

Bruce, Do you remember the Archtop that Matt brought to Beebe. Now that was a very neat way of adjusting the truss rod.

I've only eve accessed the rod from the soundhole once.

it seems a lot simpler to just run the slot out the end of the neck at the headstock end.......

Gibson style requires special neck channel and slot but a most modern truss rods just require that you cut the channel till it exits the peghead.

The reason I am asking is that I am building a little maple OM right now and I would like to put in several smaller sound holes instead of one big one. Because of that, it would be impossible to reach the truss rod from the body end.

Another way is to put a removable plug at the end block.  I think that GAL/American Lutherie has a tutorial in one of the issues within the last couple years.

Yes Dave, that was a beautiful guitar and innovative approach to adjustment. Ball end T-wrench if I remember correctly. Slot up the headstock with veneer front and back.

I make Gibson style rods for my guitars from 3/16" SS rod, accessible from the headstock. There is nothing lighter.
