I'm starting a 27.5" baritone. What truss rod do you guys use? It seems that I want one about and inch longer than standard, but I can't find one.

Steve,
try an electric guitar truss rod. LMI or StewMac sells the longer ones.

Peter,
Those are about 3" longer. Isn't that too long? It seems that being that long might cause some problems.

That's what I use for my banjo necks. They are 26 3/16 sale and they work great.

Is this an acoustic or electric build? For a 14 fret acoustic they may be too long. I would make up a pattern and see where the rod falls. I believe Shane can make custom length rods if you need an in between size.

It is for a 14 fret baritone.

Steve,

I had the same problem a couple of months ago.  I found a slightly longer truss rod from WD music products.  It is 20 inches long.  In my case (a 28 inch scale baritone) it means that it will end about under the first fret.  This project is still under construction so I cannot report further...

From Allied, a standard rod is 13.25" and an electric is 17.25".
LMI has a 14.5".
For my 27.5" scale, I would like one about 15.25".

I think the 14.5" would be a better choice than the 17.25". Does anyone agree or disagree?

There is the LMI Martin stylethat is about the right length. Does anyone use those?

Steve,

I have used one of the two Gotoh 2-way adjustable rods to fit all of my various instruments. They come in either 410mm or 385mm overall length (including adjuster) which is 15 1/4" and 15 7/8". I get them here in the UK but Shane sells them - scroll down the page to near the bottom.

I use the LMI 14 fret rod in mine .. and have built from 28-29 inch scales, all with 14 fret joints. Just slide it up a bit under the first fret or so, use some CF bars either side, and then it doesnt quite make it out of the neck block, but its still accessable, even if you dont drill the hole in the UTB, which I usually dont.

Stephen Bennett played my latest baritone here at a show Saturday night, and was blown away by the power and sustain it had - he almost couldnt put it down, played 5 tunes in his two sets on it. It was a real treat.

Steve, LMI will make you a custom length if you ask. They charge the same price for custom lengths as for their normal ones; however, it takes a little longer to arrive.
