I'm refinishing an old 1965 Rickenbacker and so far it's going pretty good. I'm using all the aerosol products from StewMac as this is my first lacquer job and I normally FP all my guitars. So far I've sprayed the sealer followed by the black lacquer and put my first four coats of clear gloss on. Would you guys recommend level sanding at this point and then spray the remaining clear coats on, or should I spray the rest and level sand after everything has cured? I've heard people do it both ways but would like to know the reasons why as well as what will work better with these products. Thanks! John |

John, I have used thats same stuff, and yes, shoot for day (several coats) and level sand between. Then reshoot. Level again, once you have no pin holes, give another coat or two and then finish it out. |

John...I typically have shot 5-6 coats, wait 2 weeks and level sand. Shoot the remaining 4-5 thin coats, wait 3-4 weeks and final wet sand to 12,000 grit and buff. It simplified the process for me and got good results. The longer you can wait before sanding, the more effective the sanding seems to be. |

Follow up,after you spray your last few coats, you do want to let it cure before finishing it out. |

Is the same true for waterbased spray lacquer? |

Dave...I followed the same protocol for KTM-9. Likewise...the longer you wait the easier and more effective the sanding will be. |

Thanks for all the great info fellas! It seems like I'm off to a good start. I had a total of about 6 coats on and I just finished level sanding. I only broke through one little spot along the edge so I'm pretty happy about that. I'll spray three more coats, wait, level, three more and call it done for about a month and hope it cures nice and hard. I'l post some before and after pics of the guitar, but I'm guessing it will be a pretty dramatic difference. Cheers! John |
