Im new here so if Im not doing something right dont bite my head off. I got this les paul style guitar from a guy online. He told me that the guy he got it from had got it from a custom shop in japan. I asked Paul R. Bordeaux, he does custom inlay work, he said that the inlays appear to be mother of pearl and could be worth 2500. Im planning on trying to sell this but I dont know how much its worth, or any real information.

Any logo on the headstock (like Lotus?) my money is on it being a "copy", even a "lawsuit" guitar...

If you can show a pic of the headstock to us, that'll make things a bit clearer. You see, it could have been built first, with the custom inlay added later.

based on the information at hand i can't give any opinion on its value. but the fact that is a asian clone would probably tend to preclude it having any great value, regardless of the inlay work. how it sounds and plays would probably be more indicative of its worth.

there aren't a lot of rules here, basically no politics or religion, no foul language, simply be courteous and well mannered, but it is customary to use our names when posting, either in your user name or in a signature block rather than only a "handle". welcome!

I would agree with Michael.  You would be amazed at the incredible inlay work you can get on Asian guitars, mandolins, electrics, for very little in the way of expense.  Some could be OK others  not, but most don't really have the value represented by the inlay work, with the cost of labor at pennies an hour.

Welcome to OLF.

That may not even be inlay. It could be very thin shell overlaid on the surface of the wood and finished over. That's a common Asian guitar trade trick.

I'll have to put up more pics later. On the headstock there is a smaller version of the sun on the body. It doesnt seem to be a thin shell, but I dont know if I'd be able to really tell.
