Need purfling help - please

My first guitar has a simple binding scheme with purfling on the back and top, but not on the sides. I'm planning my second guitar now, and want to use a typical bwb purfling on the sides as well. The purfling measures about .100" as compared to the binding thickness of .080".
I'd rather not try to juggle the binding strip and two purfling strips in the gluing process, so can I glue the bwb purfling strip to the binding strip prior to bending? If so, should I try to make the side purfling the same thickness as the binding - and how can I do it?

it is WAY easier to glue in purflings if you glue it to the binding before hand, so you are ont he right track. I use some cheap plastic clothes pins I bought at the flea market for this job. just run a line of glue along the edge of the binding and pin it in place every inch or so.


You are saying that your binding is .08 and your purfling is .1, so there is .02 difference in width. This is easy enough to scrape or sand it down so that both are the same thickness after you have glued it to the binding. if you have a drum sander, it is super easy....just one quick pass thru and you are ready to bind. I would definitely get them both the same size before I tried to bend the binding though because the purfling may cause the binding to twist or warp.

Ray, it is important to glue them together with a waterproof glue also so they don't delaminate while bending. Titebond 2 or 3 both work well for this.

A builder friend of mine runs the glue line down the binding edge, starts the purfling at one end, and wraps the pair together using high-strength fishing line. Works like a charm. He uses Gorilla glue - says it works great and doesn't delaminate when bending.

Just a thought.

Those polyeurethane glues are supposed to be great for this (rosette logs too). I just use Titebond I for this though.
