Hi folks

I'm going to be buying some of LMI's violin pegs for my next flamenco guitar/s as an alternative to their specialist flamenco ebony set.
The violin sets come in either ebony or rosewood.
Apart rom the colour does anyone have any opinions of the character of the two timbers that might be a deciding factor?
IE. grip, weight, strength, settling in, etc.
Rosewood has alot of resins in it that i notice when bending, and i wonder if that affects grip etc.

I have a K Yairi flamenco with ebony pegs and its lasted 30 years with no slippage. I was dubious when I first bought the thing but Ive been pleasantly surprised.

I haven't used pegs on a flamenco but have used both ebony and rosewood pegs on lute heads. I have found that the rosewood ones are more prone to slipping than ebony, in both rosewood and fruit wood peg-heads. I make my own pegs, but now only make ebony ones and have replaced the rosewood ones with ebony.

Hey Colin, how about some pics specifically of your pegs? Also, have you tried boxwood?

Ebony has more silica in it than rosewod, and that may help it stick better. It also has a tendancy to wear the peg holes.

That said, I have not found any real difference between ebony and rosewood pegs in that regard myself, though. I think they work about equally well if they're well fitted.

One nice thing about turning peges is that you can make them to fit off the lathe. I've never founsd a peg shaver that I could love, and fitting them by hand with a file is time consuming.

I knew a fellow who tried making pegs out of ligbnum vitae once. Once..... You could hammer the darn thing in and it would still slip.
