Here is a wood to start the week. I would ask my aussies buddies to let our international cousins cogitate for a while. The image was taken just after it was resawn so the surface is a little rough but you can see the quarter sawn figure. Some of the material was resawn on the back sawn face and the figure looks very similar to water fall bubinga. I might post another that shows that in a couple of days. regards Tim

Tim That looks a lot like the set of curly narra I just got form Uncle Bob. Whatever it is it looks nice!! |

All I can say at this early juncture is that they used to cut up this wood into blocks and layer some of the street of London with it! Tim |

It is not Narra????? layers the streets of London???? The only wood in enough abuddonce to use a a paving block I would think would have been Oak but it does not look like Oak???? Huuuuuum

Well done Sam! Your skillful has got to be worth somthing. Given your cogitations I will have to ruminate on what I should send your way! Eucalyptus marginata : Jarrah. Jarrah comes in a wide variety of colours and figure. Density varies widely. The figure in this particular piece is uncommon and will require a little restraint in the seasoning process so that all the stresses and strains have been removed. I would normally resaw over size to afford enough room for any grain undualtion that might occur. A thermal blanket/fox bender is recommended when bending Jarrah with type of figure to avoid cracking due to the "short grain". It will produce a stunning finish and also a strong resonant tone. As with all of these timbers Jarah is a dusty timber when processing so a good dust extraction system would be an advantage. I will put up some other images tomorrow. regards Tim |
