I think #2 is more pleasing to the eye. The sap line widens as the guitar widens and, to me, just looks better. Ron |

I would always pick 2 as the grain narrows as does the back, its just more pleasing to the eye - unless there is much better figure the other way, or a bothersome defect that I would rather not be seen. |

I think #1 would be OK if you were using a center strip but without a strip I'd go with #2. |

Rich: nope, haven't gotten around to resawing those yet! I'm too busy actually building to process more wood into thinner pieces of wood. Those blocks have tighter flame and a bit more colour, near as I can tell. We should coordinate a build at some point, though ;) That's a set of black walnut I got from BobC a long, long time ago now. |

I'm split, #2 seems more the standard option, but I think one looks pretty cool as well, mainly because the sap wood section would line up well with the neck, kinda give it a cool little look. Nice looking stuff either way. Best of luck. Jason |

Chris: I was going to use one of those, only they're really way too narrow for a 16.6" wide guitar body. Got one earmarked for a redwood-topped OM-ish thing (once I get around to designing my OM-ish thing, that is...) Heath: my gut instincts were to go with #2, but a little niggling voice was saying 'but what about flipping it around?'. I'll go with my gut on this one. Besides, I have this set's twin sitting in the pile, so I may yet build an 'upside down' geetar. |
