Dang Larry, how many flippin' control knobs does that thing have?

Here is another LS Cocobolo OMFS, the third Redwood/coco combo in the last four guitars.
The back binding went on last evening, so I'm closing in.
Its kinda ugly right now






I have to admit, I am getting a little board with Rewood/coco, I have a few guitars coming up with spruce tops, one with Madrose the other with flamed Hondo. It will be a welcome change

Still very much in construction phase...

A mahogany neck, fresh off the clamps..

A legnth of air dried cherry blank, thin strips of walnut and mahog for a 5 neck lam..

A hunk of 2" thick green cherry, endgrain sealed and will be airdried somewhere for a couple of years

several slices of greenwood cherry B&S fresh from reswawing, about to be stickered in the outdoor shed for a year.

When I've got that sorted, I'll get the neck lam done and start joining the guitar plates!!

After a 2 month hiatus playing around europe including an dream gig
playing Disney songs with a raft of talented folk including Nick Cave and
Grace Jones i'm back working on my first build (a stewmac 000).

The neck is almost done bar final filling sand and finish.


I decided to make the neck/fingerboard width less than on the plan and
then realised that i would not be able to use the supplied pyramid bridge
that comes with the kit as it has string holes pre-drilled (at the wrong
spacing for my new neck) I was hesitant about making the bridge as i
thought it would be much harder than it turned out to be. I traced the
contours from the old bridge and was really happy with the result
especially the saddle slot which i made a simple wooden jig to rout.


I've put about 5 coats of tru-oil on the body and sides but the top is
unfinished as yet because my attempt at pore filling with UHU epoxy left a
lot to be desired and i still have visible pores. Also i'm trying to decide if i
want to mask or strip the bridge and fingerboard extension areas on the
top - Any suggestions for a first timer?

Well I finally have the Maylasian Ebony/BC Sitka on the bench ready to be bound. Hope to have it out the door very soon I will get pictures if I remember tonight.

Chris, what is your dustless radius jig?

Some laminated sides with laminated solid linings. This rim is so unbelievably stiff I don't think I need to use a mold at all. We'll see...

I have followed your last several tutorials that you have posted and I have followed along with them for my first build.
The difference is that you this is your third guitar for my one since I've started!!

Aahhhh... the king of clean is interested in a dustless radius dish jig. Even with the dustless model, my bench is in no way as clean as yours!
I have been busy building my jigs, and one that I built is a dustless radius dish jig. It is not 100% dustless, but I have done three dishes and each time I have been able to reduce the dust to less mess than I made drilling the screw holes to hold it together. I suspect my next improvement to the jig will be the last and will hopefully know more by next week at this time. Until then...

2 vol, 2 tone, p/u selector, input jack...the others are bridge and tailpiece!

Working on a vacuum clamping jig to hold fretboards flat for radiusing, pressing frets and dressing ends. And, the bottom of the jig works as a flat surface for flattening the back of the fretboard. Haven't tried pressing frets yet, but it works very well with the stew mac aluminum sanding beam which at 18" is a little longer than a 20 fret fingerboard. I was surprised to see how much work was needed to tune up a pre-serviced board.

I've got two going for the first time. I think I may go back to one at a time for the next few. The first one is a honduran rosewood and red spruce 13 fretter. It will be set up for mediums and hopefully lots of volume.

Here is a close up of the tops, I have been experimenting with some different bracing trying to see what it does. The transverse brace runs between the saddle and the pins.




I also did one with double sides (shown here) and one without but both with solid linings. I was surprised that once the linings were in the double sided rim was no stiffer.



These guys are ready to close but will have to wait until after vacation and a much needed week long soak in the lake. Anybody know any good lumber yards in Vermont? Thanks for looking!

My camera broke so I can't really show pictures right now... but I've just put the finish coats on two new babies... a small jumbo malaysian blackwood / german spruce cutaway and a jumbo baritone Indian rosewood / adirondack cutaway - both going to dealers.. one in New Jersey and the other, Japan. Also, touching up some finish on K-35 - a cedar topped, honduran bodied small jumbo that got played a lot (and scratched up a lot) in Montreal. Working on plans for a new super jumbo and also a modified dreadnaught - both orders from Montreal... guess they didn't like my existing sizes.

Burton, Those are some really cool top bracing schemes.
A work of art in themselves for sure. It hurt my head for a moment looking at them they are so complex. I for one want to know how they sound when you get them strung up. We could use some sound bites!

I just have to hand it to you on the innovative scheme of braces. So here:   

Nathan, cool work bench dude. That's a lot of work. You probably won't want to hear I got my maple top bench including the storage cabine underneath from an electronics classroom at our school for $40. My main bench....

Anyway, one question, are you adding subsequent layers to cover the bolt heads? Or are you removing them? Jus' wonderin'.
