Thanks in advance for advice for this question and all past excellent advice. I feel like I'm stealing-receiving all this information from so many accomplished luthiers. What is the final thickness of sides, back and top of my Macassar Ebony-Englemann OM. |

Sorry, Bob, but we can't answer this question. When the top is being thicknessed, the luthier will often thin the top until he/she gets the correct amount of flex. Some like to taper the top as it approaches the tail. Others go for a constant thickness. If I were programming a robot to make tops, I would make them .125" inches thick. I might go a bit thinner for the back. around .10. I like to thin my sides to .08" But I'll go thicker or even a little thinner depending on how ready the wood seems to bend. Some builder will thin the waist thinner than the other parts of the sides. Other's won't. Many will thin the sharp bend of the cut away. |
