Best for this group to remember the KISS philosophy.

I am to blame here I read the first paragraph in Johns post "The radii that I have used to make my dishes was based out of cumpiano's book. To achieve the arch what I did was made 3 points 24 on a 24 inch diameter and moved the middle point 1/4 and 1/8" lower, then extended metal rod and traced a line." Then assumed he was refering to figure out the radius of a domed dish for the body and was worried he thought the dome should be 14' for a 28' top. Then everything went wild

Pretty cool hua?

I heard a story once that went like this:

Johnny (not to be confused with our thread initiator Jon Fry) was the only person from the small town of Smallville to go to college.  After he had been away awhile he came back and all the townspeople came to the train station to meet him.  When he emerged from the train on the platform the town cheered.  This was the towns prodigy!  After the cheering died down a man asked Johnny to say something really smart that he had learned at school.

Johnny thought for a few seconds and said: "Pie R Squared!"

Everyone opn the platform looked at each other in shame and disgust and Johnny was crestfallen.

Finally someone piped up and said "Johnny, What kind of school did we send you to?  Everyone knows that pie are round!"

I have a spreadsheet that will calculate the "X dimension"  for any radii for a given chord length.  If anyone wants it I can send it by email (its not that big a file) if I get an email address.  Or if I can, upload it to the OLF.

Go Sooners!

Michael seeing as your the cad-guru here producing excellent drawings why don't you offer a radii sheet with the common radii segments drawn to full scale. Like 24" for the 15', 28' etc. Then they could be offered here like your other drawings and folks that need to make templates can purchase your full sized drawing. That's what I did when I was still employed and had access to AutoCad and a plotter. It would be a win win for all.

Hi folks, thought this link might help you all out, the formula has been wonderful for me in easily making arcs.

New to the forum, but long time viewer...great place....great resource and inspiration.

Bob the problem is that when the printer prints them the paper shrinks and the template would be off.

Hello! I'm new to the site though i have been reading for a couple of weeks. I'm sure many of you like me sat through geometry class and said why do i need to learn this stuff. I'll never need this in the real world. Then the real world came along and we realized we were wrong. I find this site helps me understand the thing I forgot or never really learned when it came to math. Here is their definition of a circle and its parts.
I like to add i think this is the best site I found relating to lutherie out on the web. I havent built anything yet but i'm trying to learn all i can before i start. I have read a lot of good stuff here.

Welcome, Mike!! These guys don't need info on circles, most of them run around in circles all day long. And some of them fly off on a tangent every now and then.
