Al, we're working in a different frequency range with guitars, and yes, that arching can make all the difference in adding stiffness and moving nodes.   Also, the violin has that pesky soundpost in it and has a very different sonic radiation pattern than we're usually after with guitars. To say nothing of the fact that a string driven by a bow follows different rules... So we, with "flattop" guitars are left messing with other things. All I know is that my sense of what to do to achieve particular results has proven good to me.   I set out to achieve a particular tone, and I'm getting it, especially with my larger 16 1/4" jumbos.
