AFTER asking the question abt varnish as a finish on guitars, I googled and found this article by Jack Read and LM Mottola:

It is a very complete discription of the use of various varnishes to build up a very thin coating that sounds like the process of french polish.
Does anyone have any experience with how durable the finish is? I guess at least it would be more sweat and alcohol resistant than FP. I'll take Rick's advise and ask this over on the 13th Fret and see who knows more.
