Hesh and I (and who knows who else) have guitars at Tony's at the same time. Tony must be one very busy dude.
This guitar is built mostly from OLF wood. Brian Hawkins suppled the Oregon Myrtle, my bro supplied the Bearclaw Sitka top, and Joshua French contributed the Bocote bindings. Well, sort of. What Joshua did was not buy the Bocote plank form Clark's in Houston. He was kind enough to let me grab it...thanks Joshua!

Very Very nice Steve, I really like that Myrtle and the top is gorgeous too! I like how the dark bindings really set off the myrtle. I've never used myrtle before, How is it to work with? Does it bend easy ?

Why is it called Oregon Myrtle? Are there different sorts of Myrtle in the US or is Oregon where it mostly grows?

OOOH, that is fantastic. I am glad to see the backstrip and how good it looks. Most myrtle and maple backs for that matter seem to not have a back strip. I like the way that frames the back and brings out the dark colors.

Thanks, fellas. It's pretty plain for me...glad you like it. In fact, this was a demo guitar for a former student. We were building guitars side-by-side, and this was the guitar I chose to demonstrate each technique.
I appreciate the comments about the color scheme, because that's something I labor over--trying to get it just right. The colors here were a bit tricky (the last photo shows it to best advantage) in that green predominates. Finding a match on the bindings was a challenge, and the top, well, Colin might be right! The Sitka being rather pinkish didn't match too well. That said, Tony's epoxy coat seems to be bringing the colors more toward each other.

Dave (A)- the Myrtle is a dream wood. Bends like plastic. Even when it's that curly. Well, as this is my first experience w/it, I've got a test group of one. So take my comment with a needed grain of salt.

Lance--go ahead and scrutinize. Tell me what you think. (Maybe in a PM? )

Dave (W)- I'll let our Western brethern chime in on this, but yes, this species does grow in Oregon. It's also called Pepperwood, and I'm not clear why it's called a Myrtle.

Steve, I appreciate the comment about the backstrip. It is a definite departure from the West Coast aesthetic. But it does frame the wood nicely--to my eye--and I'm glad that it affects you the same way.

Steve - Fantastic looking instrument!  I think the pink tone on the top is a reflection from the shower curtain.....  You may have to talk to Tony about his bathroom color choices.

I see that this is going to get one of your 'winged' bridges.  Are you using the bocote for the bridge?

Hi Steve, thanks mate! No, to further complicate things color-wise, I'm using a Brazilian rosewood bridge. However, this particular blank is almost black, so it won't be too much of a clash. It should match the ebony fretboard pretty well. That said, on the right instrument I think Bocote would make a fine bridge...fingerboard as well.

Well, I just found out that it is not a bathroom, but Tony's superb spray area of his shop. 

Steve - do you finish your bridges or just polish and oil?  If you are using a dark BRW does your finish darken the wood even more?

Do you ever get down to Houston?  I'm about halfway to Galveston form downtown H.  There are a few other OLFers in the area.

Hey, I got a pic from the white room yesterday. One of mine is hanging with yours and Hesh's. Hope they are all getting along nicely. We need to see Hesh's whiteroom pics.

Anyhow, that guitar looks mighty nice. The bicote trims out very well and reminds me to consider that slab I got when out your way.

I built one guitar out of Myrtle and can second the easy bending part. A little heat and it goes limp.

No finish, per se, just as you said, they are polished and oiled/waxed. And they do indeed darken.

You are in the Clear Lake area, right? My wife's sister lives off of 518, past Clear Creek high school. I think South Shore Harbor? Anyway, yes we do get down there from time to time. We should all meet at Clark's some time...maybe get a group discount!
