I have been meaning to put this up for while. I found the process of laying the purfling a bit tricky and wondered whether there was an alternative approach. I had been messing around with a homemade vacuum and thought that I might be able to form the rosette grouping of purfling veneers in the round.

The process entailed wrapping the veneers, polycarbonazte sheet, vinyl vacuum sheet around a pipe and applying the vacuum for about an hour. The formed rosette purfling was then sliced using the fret slotting saw to produce 0.080"/2mm slices.

regards

Tim

I had an opportunity to take a couple of close up images. I will put up a few images of my vacuum form tomorrow

Tim that worked very nicely.

Look forward to the pics of the vac form.

I'm stuck on individual lines from Martin.

This is intriguing however.

Thanks for sharing.

Question: How did you saw them? TIA

Tim, what do you slice them with? I've had some bad luck using a bandsaw on cylindrical stuff like that.

I believe he said he uses a fret slotting saw blade.

Thanks Waddy.

That is correct however I should qualify it by saying that I tape up the lamination end to complete the circle and then place them in a cradle just above the fret slotting table saw blade and revolve the form to slice the rosette laminations. I will make sure I post a few pictures tomorrow.
