Freehand is good. You have the opportunity to exploit the unexpected artistic moment.

John, I have had many opportunities to exploit those artistic moments. Haven't we all.
John does have a nice milling machine, but you can acomplish the same thing (saddle slot) with the John How jig and a lam trimmer.
Absolutely. Last weekend I totally botched the saddle slot in my first ever bridge - following the instructions in Cumpiano's book.

Yesterday I made a John How jig, and the results this morning were great, all three bridges turned out perfect! Through the week I was even thinking of buying a small milling machine - I was kinda frustrated.

Thanks guys! Your timing was perfect!
