I never have the exact color and width for rosettes. Usually they aren't that big. I 've only done 2. The first was just .1" wide. The one on the baroque guitar is just bwb purfling with a solid wood piece for the center. Simple as can be. The planned rosette for the Torres will have 24 strips, part of the center is repeated on the border of the belly. 3 colors are about .021" (,5mm) one is .027", and some white "paper" at .014". It adds up to .568 wide. About 14.5mm, a little smaller than the plan (16.). Do you have any thickness scraper that works good? I made one with just a clamp on chisel, but I wouldn't call it great. Don't know where it went. I'm pretty sure that would be handy to have. Do you add extra for the wood expanding when it is bent? Don't ribs seem to be thicker when bent? I've seen people having a ring cut out that they test them in. Ahh. I'm not thinking! If you don't cut the hole out, you can just make it a little wider if you need to; can't you? I guess the biggest thing I wonder about is how to decide a good starting width? How deep/how much stock left, do you make it? The spruce is pretty stiff, and the body is not that big; so it won't be real thick. The edges will probably be around 2mm or so. I think. Thanks for anything you can think of. |

I do not leave extra as I use shellac and CA to glue the rosette. My channel width varies depending on the actual pieces I’m using, but I always set the depth at .070. This way I can cut the sound hole out by flipping the top on the routing jig and finishing the sound hole from the back and never have to adjust the depth of the bit… |

That’s a good idea for cutting out the sound hole Ed. |
