Post subject: | Spring Pin vs Solid Core… |
Salutations. The spring pin that holds the gear to the elevating shaft of my drum sander has snapped, allowing the shaft to spin freely in the gear rendering it useless. I have managed to remove the remnants of the old pin from both shaft and gear and have a clear pathway to knock in a new spring pin and resurrect my drum sander. My question is, is there some specific benefit from having a hollow spring pin vs a solid core rod such as say the back end of a drill bit? Is there some machinist wisdom I should know about? I’ve found suitable spring pins online and can buy them, but they come in bags of 100 which is 99 more than I need. Any downside to just using a drill bit or some other type of hardened steel rod? |

The roll pin is slightly larger in dia than the hole. So when it is tapped in the compression of the roll holds it in place. It is a very effective fastener for the purpose. Any hardware store or big box builders supply would have a selection. I'd replace it in kind. |

Stick with roll pin unless you plan on penning the solid pin. Otherwise it may work itself out due to the vibration of the machine. And even then I would stick with a roll pin… |

Spring pin for the win. In house thicknessing returns which beats a 45 minute walk each way to the hobby collective down the road. Pray it lasts until I can upgrade… Thanks for the tips! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
