Started cleaning up, and found some wood. Can't remember what it was, it was just a chance find at the new Rockler store; right around the corner in the mall from the last one. It was a fairly narrow board, but I got ribs for 1 besides these 2 backs. I just measured it at .82 sg. I think that rules out Sapele. It's fairly hard stuff. I thought it started with s, c, or g. Hah. I don't know what it is. I thought that I took pictures of all the stuff I had re sawn, and thicknessed at the mill, and posted it on OLF, but I couldn't find it. Could be andiroba, AKA royal mahogany. Sent from my SM-G950U1 using Tapatalk |

Nice to know, but does it matter? It's going to turn into a guitar no matter what we call it. |

I kind of agree, but if I'm building an instrument for someone else and they ask what wood was used, I don't want to have to shrug my shoulders and say I don't know. On the other hand if I had ninja Marketing Skills, maybe I could name it Mystery Wood™ and add an upcharge. |

Andiroba has a very disagreeable odor, nothing like Honduran mahogany. It is one of the densest mahogany look-alikes I have encountered. The 'royal mahogany' tag probably originated from the flooring industry. |

Well John, it isn't that. This stuff has a nice exotic wood smell, spicy? Cinnamon? That is just the wood; I didn't sand, or file, or cut it. I bought some Royal Ebony one time that was nice. Half almost black, half creamy. It think it was really some kind of Katalox. I like Katalox. Being harder, it might be good on a classical for more trebles? |
