They were very lightly built and only weighed at times around 2-3lbs.... amazingly light. Tops could be very thin too the 1867 we rebuilt has a .076" thick top. Built before the advent and availability of steel strings they had less energy to convert so they needed less mass for less energy. And they were not very loud which is why the guitar struggled with being heard in a band. No mystery that guitars of that day were marketed for parlors, that was the only room small enough to hear the things in... |
