I was having a little trouble pushing my chisel through the brace wood, mostly the UTB and I got to thinking about paring chisels which I don't own. I decided to turn one of my bench chisels into a paring chisel. It doesn't have the length but it's long enough. Anyway, I set my Veritas MKII to 20 degrees and and roughed it out on my belt sander and then went through my 400/ 1200 diamond stone followed by by 8000 ceramic and finished on the strop. I took it to the braces and just couldn't believe the difference 5 degrees made. It's like the wood was scared of it and I didn't need to do anything but guide it. It was a good morning.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I recently say a Rob Cossman video where he mentioned having a chisel at a shallow angle set aside specifically for use in softwoods. Obviously you wouldn't chop a mortise in hardwood with it but seems like a great idea to have a specialty chisel set up for this type of operation (brace shaping)!

In addition to to this, does the curved chisel make any difference.? I care the curves pretty easily with my flat chisel.

I’ve always just gone bevel down with a regular chisel to pare the scallops
