Stew Mac just published a fantastic new documentary following Michael Bashkin as he builds one of his incredible instruments. It’s about two hours long and showcases a number of approaches I know are of high interest here (like CNC, HHG, solid linings, pre-profiling braces, awesome jigs, and an incredibly well thought through and integrated build process). Fantastic video. I'm half way through and almost want to start over! I have searched in vain all weekend for the small scraper/hoe-shaped chisel Michael was using for glue clean up. I know I've seen that tool before but I can't for the life of me find the name. Anyone know what that's Called? |

Try a search for mini or detail scrapper - Here's some - https://www.leevalley.com/en-us/shop/tools/hand-tools/scrapers/110314-detail-hand-scraper?item=50K6601 But no reason not to make your own out of a strip of steel you can bend and sharpen. You can make whatever shape you want. Doesn't have to be carbide or hardened for a small amount of scrapping. Great video and mighty nice of Michael to offer up his techniques. AND for he and StewMac to put it out there for free! |

I've only started to watch the video, but I'm already intrigued by his method for shooting the top and back plates (4:03) where he passes the plates past the plane which is clamped in a fixed position. He's using a No. 7 plane. Has anyone here tried that approach? |
