Here is a recent Mod-dread 14 fret, 25-1/2 scale, Sitka over Leopard wood. If you are curious what Royal Blackwood (torrefied Purple Heart) looks like, here you go. The head-plate, FB and bridge are Royal Blackwood. I’m actually pretty impressed with the stuff!

Besides everything looking absolutely perfect, where do you find quilted spruce?

I think that came from Pacific Rim Tonewoods.

Stunning all round,and THAT Soundboard!

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

That is stunning! Well done! I'm also liking Royal Blackwood a LOT for bridges and fretboards.

That's a looker for sure. I love the leopard wood too, great looking stuff and makes for a fine guitar. I've never heard of this Royal Blackwood before, interesting. A dead ringer for the looks of ebony.

Really lovely guitar. Have you been using dyed veneers for a long enough time to get an opinion of light fastness? A lot of the green dyed veneers I used 10+ years ago have proven to be fugitive, i.e. fading to a dull olive gray.

Hi Tom,

I’ve only been using them for 5-6 years. Back then it was orange and red. An orange one from 5 years ago was recently in the shop for a seasonal checkup - the purflings still looked nice and bright!

Time will tell, M
