I'd like to dye this top a burgundy color, but if it's possible I'd like to leave the spalted part a natural color. Is there a way to do this? Could I carefully paint shellac over the spalted parts? Will the black line prevent dye from leaching into the spalted parts? |

The black line is the spalt. It's mildewed wood, essentially. |

I wonder if you could cover it with frisket and then carefully exacto along the spalt lines? |

Tangent: It's a darn shame you will be covering up that section in the middle with a fingerboard extension. |

But that I have that wood at all was incidental. I wanted a piece of Maple for the top of an experiment, and those pieces were the cheapest maple cap available when I bought the mahogany blank underneath. |
