Post-convention report highlights. This was my first time attending the full convention and it was totally worthwhile. It was well organized and well attended with people from all over the U.S. and Canada. I also met people from Europe, Australia, and Singapore. Great workshops that gave me lots to think about and apply in my building in the future. The three afternoon exhibition sessions where I exhibited my guitars and octave mandolins gave me a lot of feedback on them, allowed me to compare notes with other builders, and get to see many beautiful instruments brought by other builders. I got to hear one of my guitars played (briefly) by Alex De Grassi in the steel string listening session which was pretty cool. I had the opportunity to meet Graham McDonald and thank him for writing his book "The Bouzouki Book" which gave me valuable, hard-to-come-by information on nut and saddle specs that were very helpful when I designed my octave mandolins. My table was next to the tables of fellow OLFers Michael Colbert and Craig Wilson. Craig came all the way from Richmond, ON. It was great to meet him and get to hear and play his archtop which is a beauty. It was one of the standout guitars to my ears in the steel string guitar listening session and Alex looked like he was enjoying playing it. Michael's guitars were gorgeous as always. Also got to meet durero which was great to put a face to his OLF handle. Somehow, I managed to escape without adding even more to my wood stash despite there being several excellent wood suppliers there. It wasn't easy. |

The show was amazing. Got to meet. lot of people that from the OLF and other parts. Im stoked that the electric guitar listening session went well wand one of my Tele's was very well received. I brought a Buch of wood to sell. Sold about 1/2 of it but then bought a bunch but the main problem was stopping by my buddy's wood store in Brookings and filling the truck up with goodies. Pacific Coast Woods always has the goods. |

There was a rumor going around at the La Conner Guitar Festival that this was gonna be the last GAL convention. I hope it’s not true! It was a lot of fun hanging out with folks who’s eyes didn’t role back in their heads when you stared talking about guitars… The first 3 guitars are mine, the guitars and octave mandolins on the next table are Jay’s top shelf creations. |
