I have seen where Osmo PolyX oil has been used on necks. Would it be applicable to use on the body too? What about the top? idunno

I know tru-oil does. It's for gunstocks & dries hard & clear.
2 coats does a neck for me.

I've often read that it's penetrating oil and will soak into the wood adversely effecting sound production (dampens the vibrations), but I did see a video where is didn't seem too.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Steve, I use it by itself on necks, fretboards (over CA) and back and sides. I like it over shellac and resins (I'm crazy and mix things all up) on tops, just to keep oil out. How much oil would get in I don't know. I just like the way hard resins make the belly feel/sound. But I like that you can just touch up the Osmo easy.

When I first started building, I finished a couple of guitars using TruOil. It worked fairly well, but doesn't have quite the durability I'd like. I filled the pores with z-poxy before application. I'm wondering if Osmo is a little more durable than TruOil.

For you guys that have used Osmo on necks, did you pore fill first?

It sounds like you could use Osmo on the body and the top, provided you sealed the top with shellac first...

I used Osmo on the latest following the schedule from House Guitars on YouTube. I used satin instead of matte but otherwise followed exactly and it turned out nicely.

A shellac base coat on top and porefill body might make for a nice way to do a matte finish. Interesting. :)

I’ve done it and really like it. It’s not thick and protective but more like an oil finish. I’ve done several Osmo bodies and French polish tops.

After seeing Brads latest guitar with OSMO neck finish, I ordered some to try.

I had a suspicion other coatings would not adhere to OSMO down the road. I contacted them to find out. There response was something like once OSMO always OSMO because of the wax component.

Since I'm doing bolt on necks, I'm going to try it out there as re-OSMO is supposed to be easy and a removable neck adds to the ease of refinishing a neck.

Still undecided about a whole guitar in OSMO. But I'm sure I've seen pictures of acoustics in OSMO but can't remember where. It was probably here though.
