Couldn't find the ""made a mess of that" thread to post this, so starting a new one. So, cutting binding ledges went not too bad in the beginning with my tower jig and SM bits set, but purling ledges on the back required that little spacer between the bearing and the cutter, NOT under the bearing as I had placed it, so..... Back plate suffered a little bit of router rash, which was successfully removed by using using fractionally wider and deeper binding ledge for (2mm) bindings and routing for double purfling strips, and the top's ledges matched to that width. After fitting double purflings top and back, I lost an inch of the top's purfling somewhere - broke off during some scraping, so... Routed off the top purflings that remained and thought, well the back purflings could be better fitting, and went to rout them off as well... The deeper binding ledge I'd routed now meant the bearing was dangerously close to riding up into the ledge on the back because of it's very tight cylindrical radius, fortunately not much damage was done, but my sphincter was getting a LOT of exercise, and by removing the jig's counterbalance weight to keep the router from tending to lift, i was able to do both the runs needed, but never, EVER, want to go though that again. Oh, and I roasted the beautiful flamed maple bindings dark brown with the heat blanket when bending them, just for good measure...... NOT my best day Cheers |

Ouch. I've never been there Colin, cough, ahem. A dram and a deep breath and all is good again. |

I had a friend that happened to… (Robbie O'Brien reference…) For me, many times a “fix” made it nicer. I also will have some builds that go without a hitch and others will fight me every step of the way. That's part of the mystique. You never know… |

I don't use power tools. I get enough problems without them. Maybe with them, they would come ever faster. I don't need that. Good to see that you got through it Colin. |

Colin, I came very close to that a while back when I routed the binding ledges and had to use a dremel to rout the purfling channel, because the SM spacer didn't give me a safety margin. Ever since, I've always routed the purfling channel first, and then the binding channel. This solves the problem. Mike. |

after 46 years of building guitars, I know when I walk into the shop in the morning this not going to be a good day! So I clean up the place I do not touch any guitars I'm making! I cannot justify a big mistake . Tomorrow is another day! I once unplugged a power tool by grabbing the cord & pulled out of the wall (10feet) only for the the wall end go through a cedar top-Already on a guitar!! Walk away! NOPE ! walk away if ya get a bad feeling or things go wrong right away! Mike |

I also do my purfling rout first. BUT, I also do my preliminary binding route before that so that I am not hogging out so much. Pat |
