Old furniture don't have solid wood most of the time. The furniture makers often even match the veneer on the front and back! I have made that mistake a couple of times, but I once did get BRW enough for 20 parlor pyramid bridges from a solid piece of supporting wood from a table under the BRW veneered table-top |

Back in 2016, I started thinking I would make a second violin, so I started hanging out on Maestronet. I was lucky enough to see a thread where someone was selling a bunch of wood their father had accumulated before he died (he had a truly massive collection!). Among my finds was a piece of flamed maple about 3 feet long and about 2X3 inches. Guess where my binding will come from? |

Luthier bias! Every pretty piece of wood we think should become a guitar. I recently cobbled together a small loom out of curly maple for weaving scarves. I could justify doing that because the bugs had infested it. After a thorough roasting in the oven for a few hours to make it safe it was still structurally strong enough to use for these "lesser" projects. |

That is no lie. I used to see rosewood furniture and practically cry. I attended a funeral once and the coffin was made of rosewood. When I was starting out, I got a lot of wood from pianos and old furniture. After all - it's ALL just raw material in my eyes. |

I heard he used to write music and now that's he's dead he is instead decomposing... |
