Hi Chris, One source of chestnut lumber is old veneered furniture that is headed for the skip. After the blight many of the dead trees were harvested and used for the substrate wood for veneer work. Another source are the beams from the old barns that have been torn down to make way for housing developments. I can still buy salvaged chestnut lumber from my local hardwood dealer ($10/bd.ft.) |

And sadly the Ash is very soon to follow and Walnut is facing some serious issues too. |

Several years ago our local luthier gathering hosted a guest speaker from the Missouri department of conservation. While most of her talk was about the danger to black walnut from thousand cancker disease, she talked a bit about ash and mentioned there are efforts being made to breed disease resistant chestnuts. Chestnut trees may well make a comeback but we won’t see the benefits in our lifetime. |

I know not a politically correct thing. Its amazing how many of our natural trees etc have been destroyed by eastern invasive species. But people are working hard to bring back the Elm, chestnut, etc. |

And sometimes they get it wrong, like classifying Paulownia tomentosa as an, "invasive species" when it has been known that it's native to North America since 1961. It died off during the last period of glaciation, but was reintroduced. Paulownia is very useful wood for a lot of things, yet there are eradication programs. The stuff will grow up to 7' per year under optimum conditions. If they're going to cut down all the Paulownia, they can send the wood to me. My wife and I love trees. We watch for interesting available species and plant trees. I hope the chestnuts come back strong. |

I'm of the belief that the need for more guitars will die out long before the wood to build them will. Until then, there will be enough wood to build one more guitar. |
